College Events (Part 1) - Carnival for Freshman

At my college, the school tried very hard to make sure that freshmen interacted with one another and had a lot to do so that they would not begin to feel homesick.  The freshmen moved into the residence hall about three days before the returning students did, so that there was less confusion and time for all of the freshmen to get to know each other a little better before the arrival of the upperclassmen.

Freshman Welcome Carnival

On the second day, the college organized a carnival of sorts for the freshman to enjoy while the campus was still relatively empty.  There were make your own tie dye shirt stations, snow cones, cotton candy, spin art, and just little activities like that.  I thought that this was a really effective way to integrate dorming freshman into life away from the homes of their parents and into their new college lives.

If your college offers some sort of program like this for freshmen, it is a really good idea to participate, even if you are still trying to get all of your belonging unpacked or are kind of tired.  You will make many new friends quickly; there will be time to unpack and rest later.

Your first year in college is

Your first year in college is usually spent trying to know as much people as you can and be come friends with them., It is the time when you build up your connections and your social groups. I myself have experienced this and I can say that I didn't do pretty welll when it comes to the get to know a lot part. I have a number of friends, but not enough connections. For me, having a lot of connections is important in college. You will have many information sources.

The idea of your university that freshmen move in to the university hall first than the higher years is great! This is a great opportuniyy to make friends with most freshmen in your university. It is chance for everyone to know people who would like to be friends with. And the carnival sort of party is even better! You don't only get to befriend other freshmen like you, but you also have the chance to bond with them right away! I bet it also made you forget that you are tired already. I wish my university also have this kind of welcoming party. I can imagine how fun it was! Enjoy college :-)

I definitely feel like having

I definitely feel like having the freshmen come to campus earlier than the rest of the students is a really good idea. First off, because freshmen are obviously going to be nervous and have trouble acclimating, as you mentioned in your post. If they had to move into a dorm where all of the upperclassmen who have friends and are settled are already living they are probably goingt o be even more discouraged about their own unhappiness and newness to the place. By moving them in with all of the other freshmen, and giving them a week or so before school really starts, I think it really helps for them to build a solid ground of friends for themselves before being thrown into the true tumult of college. The one thing I will say that I don't agree with that many schools do for freshman, is a "101" class on how to survive in college. For many individuals, this is common sense, and it definitely should carry as a grade throughout your college career. Learning how to use a library, and not drink too much are things that should be second nature, or at least be able to be taught rapidly (in one week or less) rather than over the course of a whole term.

VCU has Welcome Week
My school actually has a welcome week, which is nice and anyone can join in the festivities. The first day may be like an introduction to the campus with a tour and games. The second day they may have like a movie night in the school's movie theatre. The third day they have a multi-cultural festival where you can shop at different venues. The fourth day is like sorority and frat day. Lastly, they usually do an outside block party at the park near campus. We have a live DJ, games, food, performances and contests. Of course other colleges come too because my school was always known to have fun block parties. People are usually dancing, walking around, getting to know each other. Someone may talk on a microphone (like a professor or an administrator). Then later on that night would be the near by house and club parties! The students at my school loved the party life. I never missed a welcome week at my school. I felt that you could never have to many friends or meet to many people. Plus, I wanted to be nosey and not miss out on the events! Therefore, I say to not be shy, go out there and mingle!
