College Troubles (Part 20) - Computer

Let’s face it: today, any student enrolled in college would be completely lost without access to a computer.  Most professors communicate with students outside of class using email or an online system affiliated with the college.  Students communicate with one another through social networking sites and email.

Homework is usually required to be typed and many professors have now started accepting work through email.  Homework may even require the use of a computer program, and of course, the internet has now become a necessity for conducting research for class assignments.  For these reasons, a student cannot really afford to deal with a computer that is not working properly.  The moment your computer starts acting up, you should take it to your college’s computer center so that the technicians can check it out for you and you can avoid a major disaster like a complete computer crash.

The computer is a vital resource for any college student so it is mandatory that your computer remain in the best working order it can be in.  Treat your computer well because you really do not understand how much you need it until you are not able to.

I don't think that, to be a

I don't think that, to be a college student, you necessarily need to have your own computer. That is certainly a trait that would be required of students from a very priveledged society and in college, but I don't think that all colleges would require or necessitate a student having their own laptop. The reason I say this is because there are computers everywhere. On a college campus, almost every building has a computer lab (if not several) that are openned up to both public and student use fairly regularly. I know that when my laptop broke while I was in college, I didn't find it terribly difficult (maybe just a little inconvenient), because I could go and use any of the hundreds of computers in the library. I imagine if I hadn't had a computer a probably would have just invested in an inexpensive external harddrive that I could have stored all of my personal papers and information on so that I could have used the public computers all over campus. I think that saying that you need a computer to get through college is a little hasty; there are tons of students that get by without ANY electronics at all, let alone computers.

I think having your own computer is really important. It's not required, but it makes life a lot easier. If you use the computers on campus or at the library, you will need to go when they are open. Depending on how busy it is when you get there, you may have to wait a while for a computer to be free. There might also be a time limit. If what you're working on takes longer than you thought, that would be a problem. If you forget something or you need to look something up quickly, you will need to wait. The best part of having your own computer is being able to save your work. You should always back up your files, but it's much more convenient to be able to access everything on your own computer than it is to bring a hard drive or flash drive with you everywhere. It's very possible to get through college without owning a computer, but it's not very convenient. When you graduate, you might want or need your own computer, so why not get one now if you can? It's better to have one and not need it very much than to need one and not have it.

Computers?
I think computers are a good thing to have especially with being in college and keeping in touch with family. When enrolling you use a computer, when emailing teachers or looking at a power point you use a computer. Having a computer is required in college, well have access to one because you have to type and submit papers, you can back up files, you can look for jobs and do other research while having a computer. Even though a computer is really expensive , it will pay off for its self in the long run when you have finished school and now have a good paying job. I've seen people who don't own a computer and sit through hours and hours of waiting for  a computer, so just taking the time to invest in one, could save you hours that you could spend working on another class assignment or looking for work.  If you are hundreds of miles away and can't get home, or have a phone- you can email, skype and all other things in your own dorm and it will be private, you can watch movies if you are bored and can't afford it, you can do pretty much anything with a computer and not have to worry.

I agree that it is certainly
I agree that it is certainly a great help to have a computer. I suppose its necessity depends on your major and the types of classes you are taking and the type of Professor you have. Really though, you don't have to go out and spend a lot of money on a laptop. Tablet PC's are becoming so powerful now that you can easily just get one of them instead. I mean, tablets can do web-browsing and word-processing, just as well as any laptop can. In fact you can almost turn your tablet into a laptop-like device, all you need is this iPad bluetooth mouse & keyboard hack. If you absolutely need to have a more full featured OS, that you can just drop like $250 on a netbook. In fact you might almost be better off with a netbook, because of the battery life. For instance, the Acer AS AOD270 lasts 8 hours on battery. Oh and did you know you can now recharge your laptop with a solar panel? I know some majors are now requiring studetns to have laptops, but you don't have to spend a tremendous amount of money to get good performance. All you need is enough information to make an informed purchase!

I HAVE TO HAVE A WORKING COMPUTER
When I was in my undergraduate studies, my lap top was useful but not a necessity. Only because I had access to two on-campus libraries with over 300 computers and most of my journalism courses had desk top computers inside of their class rooms. Getting to a computer was never an issue for me, plus I had reliable friends that would lend me their lap top if it came down to it. I used to carry my HP around where ever I went on campus only because sometimes I wanted to type my notes, type stories on my own lap top, or get on Facebook during lectures (let's keep that secret between me and you). So, there were days I would have my computer tag along with me and other days I wouldn't. I didn't keep my HP in good condition during my four years of college, so that's something I really regret because it was a great computer.  Now that I am taking an online studies program, I ABSOLUTELY need my Mac lap top. IT IS A NECESSITY. Everything is done on my computer now. Submitting assignments, using applications, utilizing important software, and even communicating with my classmates virtually. If I didn't have my computer let alone an Internet connection I would be in big trouble!

Computer Trouble
For some college students, their problem is that they don’t have their own PCs or laptops. Then, for some who have their own PCs and laptops, their problem is that they spend a lot of time sitting in front of their own device. Though they have more important things to do, they can’t help themselves but to stay in front of the monitor. Due to the advantages which devices can offer, it seems like some of the students tend to become lazy. Instead of reading books from the library, all they need is a PC or a laptop that can access the Internet, type a keyword, and they can find as many online resources as they can. What they do is to copy some of the parts of the documents that they have access on, rephrase some sentences, and place them in their home works. The next day, if they are asked to recite what they wrote in their home work, they can’t give an answer. Also, some tend to forget their priorities. First, some will play a game to kill time. But as time goes by, they become too attached to the game, that they set aside their home works and projects. They will even forget that they have them. Some computers, specifically laptops, have a built-in camera where students can use to have a video chat with their friends. They will chat about whatever things that they can think of. Yes, it’s true that these devices were invented to ease the life of people. However, to some people who are not using them for their real purpose, such devices can be problems.

On Computers
Precisely! It is true that computer is very much needed by college students nowadays. I have classmates who do not have computers at home and does not have enough pennies to pay in internet cafes for long periods of usage. They told me that I am very much lucky for having a laptop and an internet connection with me since we’ve got professors who would conduct exams online and would allow access only on evenings, and these exams must be submitted 2-3 hours after it was posted. They just don’t know what to do sometimes because at evenings, most internet cafes are crowded by online gamers and surfers. Some of them could not really take the exam, so lucky me! I know how it feels when your computer crashes; the feeling for me is like a feeling much more painful than a heartbreak caused by a break-up. Yes it is very much painful because what would you especially when it crashes at midnight and you have to finish something that has to be passed hour from that moment? I have tried that I don’t want that to happen again, so I decided to buy books about computers and downloaded instructional materials for computer troubleshooting both software and hardware. I would always give time for myself to study these materials because these are the medicines that could cure my sick laptop. I have installed basic softwares for maintenance and safety like TuneUp Utilities and the AVG 2013 Anti-virus which is fascinatingly reliable though it’s free.  Life in college without computer is ULTIMATELY hard. So if you are an owner of one, take good care of it as much as you can because you couldn’t just imagine yourself losing it.

My thoughts to this

Computers have made a big impact in our everyday lives and are becoming a part of our culture. The use of computer has not always been as high as it is during the past 4 years. They have changed the way we perform out task at work, at school, or even at home. I feel that our generation should be grateful for computers because they have made our life so much easier. For example at school, we use the computer to do our homeworks, to communicate with instructors, and a lot more. I always think that without computers, our lives are ruined, because we have gotten so much used to them. Thankfully, and hopefully, they should even be more accessible in during our lifetime.

One time, my laptop died on me because of hardcore gaming. I would play Call of Duty on it all day non-stop. It overheated and died. I tried all these different things to try to get it back to work, and fortunately one of them work. The GPU was so hot that the chip unsoldered a bit and was loose. The solution was to get a pen torch and heat it till 220 F but instead, I went to cheap way. I disassembled my laptop, put the motherboard in a tin foil then baked it. Yes I baked it at 300 F for 20mn. Sure enough, it worked. Man that was a relief. When I got it to work, it died again because of the same reason, hardcore gaming. Finally, I decided to buy a pen torch and do it the right way. It was so much better and lasted a little longer but it died again, so I decided to sell it on eBay. I sold it for $90. Keep it mind that this baby is a gaming machine—for $90???? Yeah, I’d much rather sell it for $90 than keep it for $0 lol.

I am glad though, that during all this, school was already over so I didn’t need a laptop that much. It took me awhile to earn the money to buy another machine.

Hope you all take very good care of your babies because you never know when you’re gona lose them lol.

All Digital- Paperless.

Computers and digital devices are awesome! They're going to be more and more common in the work force, in any field or in any job. They're good because they help keep us organized and make work a lot easier, but not everyone can afford them. If you do not have the money to afford a computer, I highly recommend that you take out some extra money while you are taking out a loan to purchase a computer. This way, you'll be able to have a computer but you won't have to worry about paying it off until after you graduate. Even if it's a high-end computer, you'll be fine until you graduate.

Computers also help because some students hand-writting are aboslutely terrible. Typing them makes more efficient for professors to read instead of taking time to analyze what the paper says. Plus it makes it more organized and practice for the business world. It is rare to find memos or reports written in the business world, (besides from personal one)... Everything is typed.

When you computer crashes, you may be in some serious trouble. That is why it's a good choice to back up everything as you go. Loosing everything half way through a semester is terrible.... That's why safety and backups are always important.

Essentially, computers are going to be around forever and as time goes on, they are going to become more sophisticated and everyone will have to keep up with the progressing technology, or they will be lost in the world.
