Becoming a better journalist
Seeing as Journalism was my major last year, I’d like to share with you some advice that will hopefully help you succeed in getting high scores and gaining more experience. I’d also like to help you understand the aims of this course, and the skills you should acquire by taking it. Pay attention in class. I know how boring the theoretical ones can be, but it will help you immensely with you final projects. Try to take good notes and focus on the examples the Professor is giving, so that you can do more research on them and come up with your own. Read ahead. I know, it’s not fun, but being a step ahead will ensure your success. I always read the next chapter before class, took out the essential ideas, underlined what I didn’t understand, and attended the lecture to receive the clear picture. You’ll be amazed of how much more interesting things become when you fully understand them. Try to improve your writing skills. This can be done by reading articles online, by joining a journalism forum, or simply by practicing. After you feel confident enough, make thoughtful comments on the online articles you’ve just read. Make sure to login so they know who you are. If you do stand out in a positive way, they might offer you an internship. Volunteer at the local newspaper/ media outlet/ college paper. You need as much experience as you can get, and no one will turn down free help. You will also learn how things truly work in this field. Keep in mind to use social networking as a key part of your resume. I hope this helps out. I wish you all the best!
